After successful liposuction to remove lipedema, a whole new life for the patients begins. Patients often suffer pain and limited mobility for years before seeking treatment. The only way to end it is through liposuction for lipedema of the pathological fatty tissue. From an aesthetic point of view, many affected women also get a whole new body awareness and a boost in self-confidence.
However, it is not uncommon for unsightly excess skin to remain after liposuction. To ensure that this does not affect the newly acquired self-image of our lipedema patients, we offer a subsequent skin tightening procedure at LIPOCURA®. Surgical removal of the excess tissue has proven to be particularly effective in cases of very pronounced findings.
We have summarised the most important information on surgical skin tightening for you below. We will also gladly advise you in person.

Laser or cool plasma treatment directly after lipedema surgery can help avoid surgical skin tightening in most cases, even if the skin quality is poor. However, in patients with very pronounced findings it is possible that a considerable amount of excess skin remains after liposuction and its removal becomes necessary.
Apart from the aesthetic detriment, wrinkling of the excess skin can also lead to skin irritations and inflammatory skin changes, especially on the inner sides of the thighs and upper arms. Whether excess skin requiring surgery occurs depends on various factors such as the condition of the skin, the extent of liposuction, the age of the patient and genetic influences. After lipedema surgery, it is recommended to wait for several months to see if the skin heals properly. If it does not shrink sufficiently, the indication for surgical skin tightening is given. In some cases, liposuction and skin tightening can be performed in a combined procedure; whether this is an option for you must be determined individually by the specialist treating you.
Surgical skin tightening measures on the body are generally possible in almost every area. Since we at LIPOCURA® take a holistic approach to the treatment of lipedema and are also concerned with the well-being of our patients after the removal of the diseased fat cells, we perform surgical skin tightening in all areas where excess skin has developed as a result of the lipedema surgery. We clarify whether the procedure is suitable for our patients in a detailed consultation.
Furthermore, interventions in the genital area (tightening of the mons pubis) are also possible.
As mentioned at the beginning, a lift can basically be performed anywhere where excess skin has developed after liposuction for lipedema. In addition to indications regarding the patient’s physical and mental health, there must also be clear excess skin that cannot tighten on its own. Our experienced lipedema specialists can assess whether those conditions apply.
In addition, you need to give your body time to recover. Unless lipedema removal and skin tightening are performed in a combined procedure, the skin tightening surgery should not be performed any earlier than six months after liposuction.
To protect the lymphatic channels, the surgical skin tightening is combined with thinning of the tissue so that only the top layer of the skin is removed and vein and lymphatic channels remain untouched. Before the surgery under general anaesthesia, the extent of the excess skin is determined and the areas of skin to be removed (for example, on the inner sides of the upper arms, thighs or abdomen) are clearly marked. It is important to remove enough skin for effective tightening, but also to avoid inflicting too much tension on the scar. The incision is placed in an area that is as inconspicuous as possible so that the procedure can be carried out with minimal scarring.
The first step of the surgery is to suction away nearly all of the fatty tissue under the skin in the marked excision area. The remaining excess skin is then removed. This procedure leaves lymphatic channels and smaller blood vessels largely intact. The edges of the fresh wound are closed with self-dissolving sutures, which do not require removal, and are covered with a special plaster.
Rest for a few days after the procedure and avoid fast and strenuous movements. However, strict bed rest is not necessary. Depending on the extent of the treatment, you can return to work after about two weeks (for sedentary work). Jobs involving standing can be resumed after three weeks. Same as after the lipedema surgery, compression garments are worn after skin tightening to support wound healing and adaptation of the tightened tissue to the shape of the body. The compression should be worn night and day for about six weeks. During this period, physically demanding activities and sports, as well as the consumption of nicotine and alcohol, should be avoided.
Our specialists have extensive expertise in the field of gentle lipedema removal and subsequent skin tightening treatments. Consequently, complications such as wound healing disorders or temporary numbness occur only in rare cases. Due to our high standards of quality and hygiene, we can keep the risks extremely low.
The costs for skin tightening at LIPOCURA® depend on several factors, including the selected treatment area, the amount of excess skin and the associated expense of the surgery.
