Lipedema is a chronic disease that occurs predominantly in women and is characterised by an abnormal, uncontrolled increase in fatty tissue. This fat distribution disorder mainly affects the extremities, i.e. arms and legs, and often develops during certain phases of life such as puberty, after pregnancy or during the menopause.

The symptoms of Lipedema vary depending on the progression of the disease and can lead to a considerable impairment of everyday life. Typical symptoms include pain, a feeling of pressure, swelling and restricted movement. A cure for Lipedema has not yet been proven. However, conservative treatments such as wearing compression stockings and regular lymphatic drainage can alleviate the symptoms. Liposuction is currently the only method of permanently removing the abnormally altered fat cells.

Lipedema is mainly characterised by a visible and palpable increase in subcutaneous fatty tissue. It usually starts on the legs and is usually symmetrical. The affected areas are often sensitive, painful and prone to bruising. Many sufferers report a feeling of tightness, sensitivity to cold and a feeling of heaviness in the affected limbs.

The exact causes of Lipedema are not yet fully understood, but genetic factors are thought to play an important role, as the disease often runs in families. Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy or the menopause, particularly due to the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, also appear to be important. Furthermore, a possible malfunction of the lymph vessels is under discussion, which could be responsible for an increased storage of fluid in the fatty tissue.

It is a widespread misconception that Lipedema is synonymous with being overweight. In fact, Lipedema is not caused by poor diet or lack of exercise and cannot be cured by diet or exercise.

The diagnostic process begins with a detailed anamnesis interview, in which we record your medical history and current complaints in detail. This is followed by a thorough physical examination, during which we pay particular attention to the characteristic fat distribution and the nature of the fatty tissue. An important part of this examination is the pinch test, in which the sensitivity to pain and the condition of the fatty tissue are checked.

We also use imaging techniques such as ultrasound to assess the structure of the fatty tissue and rule out other diseases. This comprehensive diagnosis enables us to get an accurate picture of your condition and develop a customised treatment strategy.
