The exact causes of Lipedema are not yet fully understood, but there are various factors that are suspected of favouring the disease. This explains why Lipedema often occurs during hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause.

It is also suspected that a malfunction of the lymphatic vessels can contribute to the development of Lipedema, as this can lead to a disturbed distribution of fat and fluid accumulation in the tissue. Being overweight is not a cause of Lipedema, although many sufferers also suffer from obesity. The condition occurs regardless of body weight and requires specific medical treatment.
