A personal experience report by Caroline Sprott for LIPOCURA®
Miracle cure – a big word that immediately elicits scepticism from many sufferers. And rightly so. After all, miracles don’t just happen – they come about through consistent, conscious self-care. Something that many sufferers, myself included, increasingly forget over time. A body that hurts is not exactly an intuitive invitation to receive positive attention. Even if this doesn’t sound hopeful at first, I would like to give you hope: it can be learnt again. And that is precisely the good news: we are in control of our own development.
But: I also know how difficult it is to implement these measures on top of our already demanding everyday lives. That’s why today I’m sharing my favourite supporters – products, routines and tips that provide me with concrete support and relief before and even 10 years after my liposuctions.
Lipedema is a chronic fat distribution disorder that is far more than just an aesthetic ‘issue’. It is associated with pain, swelling, tenderness and a high level of emotional distress. Many women feel that they are not taken seriously, misunderstood or alone for years.
I see it as part of my mission to educate and show ways in which we can actively support each other – regardless of the stage. One of these options is liposuction, as offered by the specialist clinic LIPOCURA®, among others, with a great deal of expertise and humanity.
An operation doesn’t just start on the operating table. It begins in our minds, in our souls and in our everyday lives – ideally as early as possible. You can use this phase to prepare yourself physically and emotionally. After all, liposuction does not leave you unaffected. They are major procedures that are associated with a lot of hope and the final result is also significantly favoured by your own commitment.
What helped me:
Talking, reading, writing, sharing – with other sufferers, in self-help groups or on social media. Finding words for your fears makes them less powerful and writing things down can untangle knots or allow you to work through them. It is also helpful to feel seen through good reading. I am happy to recommend my guidebook “Diagnosed with lipedema? You are not alone!” (Published by Herbig Verlag, ISBN: 978-3-96859-063-9)
I have been wearing flat knit compression every day since 2010 to relieve pain – and can only advise everyone to familiarise themselves with their treatment early on and make peace with it. Be it through intensive counselling in a medical supply store, discussions in a self-help group or, as in my case, with the help of fashionable self-therapy. To feel confident and empowered, I make an effort every day to dress appropriately for my compression stockings and this has significantly improved the way I feel about them. If you are at war with flat knit compression, even a light compression alternative is still better than not wearing any (such as the ‘better than nothing’ compression leggings – ‘Bankl’ for short)
Especially for the time after liposuction, it will be a daily companion again, even if hopefully only for a short time. The better prepared you are for wearing compression, the more time you have for other activities.
Whether it’s aqua fitness, trampolining or walking – regular, moderate exercise helps to prepare the tissue, stabilise the psyche and strengthen your own body awareness. It doesn’t take high-performance sport to have a noticeable effect on the lymphatic system, so don’t put yourself under any pressure to break new records. Do what gives you the most pleasure and least stress – take it easy, but repeat it regularly.
I eat a predominantly ketogenic diet – this means: very low in carbohydrates, but with a focus on healthy fats and lots of vegetables. This type of diet can help to regulate inflammatory processes in the body, stabilise insulin levels and improve general energy levels. Many sufferers report that this noticeably reduces pain and swelling. Alternatively, an anti-inflammatory or low-carb diet can also work well: less sugar, less processed food – but more healthy fats, protein, fibre-rich plant foods and anti-inflammatory spices such as turmeric or ginger. I also support my body with targeted nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin and micronutrients – after individual consultation with specialist staff, of course.
The time after liposuction is not a break – it is an active part of the process. Everything you have built up in terms of structure and stability beforehand now helps enormously.
What was important for me:
Even if it’s not always comfortable – compression after surgery reduces swelling, stabilises your connective tissue and promotes regeneration. Without compromise. Important: compression is only really effective when you move.
Your skin will be particularly dry after liposuction. Wearing the surgical girdle almost continuously and then the flat knit compression ensures that the skin is extremely stressed. It is important to strengthen this protective layer again to minimise the risk of infection. I particularly like to use ‘Lymph Love’ oil – a nourishing, sophisticated oil to support manual lymphatic drainage or for self-massage.
With LIPOPHYSIO® aftercare, LIPOCURA® offers therapeutic support that both physically supports the healing process and provides mental relief. I also keep a small surgery diary – to consciously recognise and document even the smallest successes and changes in body and mind.
No, there is (still) no miracle cure for lipedema. But there is knowledge, experience, tools and therapies that make our path easier – especially if we consciously combine them.
I am delighted to be part of this journey with Power Sprotte and to be able to share my experience as a co-operation partner of LIPOCURA®. It is this mixture of medical professionalism and human support that really helps us move forward in the end.
You can be proud of yourself – not just after the operation, but every day that you have decided to treat yourself kindly and to recognise your needs and make them a priority. Life with lipedema will always be something special, but don’t forget that every challenge you dare to take on will make you grow and become stronger. I wish you this with all my heart.
Yours
