What can I do before and after liposuction to optimize the surgical outcome?
Before surgery, a healthy lifestyle is very important: eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated and keep up gentle, regular movement as tolerated. After the operation, you should closely follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding rest, wound care and the gradual reintroduction of physical activity. Moderate regular movement, such as walking, after the initial recovery phase supports circulation, healing and mobility. Drinking sufficient water, avoiding nicotine and alcohol, and following the recommended alkaline diet and iron supplementation can further support recovery. Anti-thrombosis injections are mandatory after surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.
Good aftercare is an essential part of your treatment success. You should wear your compression garments exactly as prescribed, take all medications including pain relief and anticoagulants according to your doctor’s instructions, avoid heavy physical exertion, intense sports and lifting heavy objects during the early healing phase, and avoid strong heat such as sauna, hot baths or sunbathing to help limit swelling. Many patients report profound changes after lipoedema surgery: less pain, lighter legs or arms, improved mobility and a new relationship with their body. This often leads to more confidence, greater social participation and a stronger willingness to be active again. From admission to discharge, English-speaking contact persons explain every step clearly and ensure that you understand all medical information and instructions. We plan your follow-up in a way that fits your travel schedule. Before you fly home, you will have a postoperative check-up and receive detailed written instructions for aftercare, including compression, medication and activity levels. We also provide your documents in English, which you can share with your GP or local specialists in Iceland. If questions arise later, you can contact our team via video consultation. Depending on your individual health insurance status, medical indication and the applicable cross-border healthcare rules within the EEA, partial or full cost coverage may be possible.
